Yoga seems pretty easy when you look at others doing it in photos. Most people go to their first yoga sessions expecting it to be a walk in the park. The reality is far from this. Most first-timers come away from a class or a session aching, sometimes from the stretching of muscles, sometimes from a hard floor. This is why investing in a good quality yoga mat is essential.
Don’t Be Fooled By The Practice of Yoga
Many forget that though yoga seems calm and effortless, it is a muscle workout activity none-the-less. Yoga stretches and poses therefore contract your muscles which could lead to micro tears. This is especially so if you’re a newbie. Some of your muscles could be stretched in manner they haven’t since you were born!
In fact, others realize some muscles exist only after being sore form yoga. So, if you question is whether yoga hurts at first, the answer is yes. It sure does. The flip-side is that you’ll also feel great and with time, get better at it.
Soreness and Aches Are Normal
Soreness is an aftermath of the first yoga session you’ll have. The degree of soreness however differs as per the intensity of the workout as well as personal body fitness. The more dormant muscles you have, the more the pain.
The soreness could go for a few hours or days. When sore, you should refrain from doing intense yoga poses or deep stretches. However, routine workout should continue as this the key to healing from soreness.
Distinguish Between Injury and Aches
Beside soreness usually caused by inflammation of the muscles, there could be injury which could lead to pain. It is extremely important to distinguish they two as the latter may need a doctor’s examination.
While soreness may be hurting, it is no reason to give up on yoga, just after joining. What you stand to reap in the end: flexibility, peace, consciousness, just to mention a few, is worth the little soreness.
Be sure to, however, distinguish pain from soreness. With this said, be patient! The first few sessions may be challenging and tiresome but be lest assured that in a few weeks all you’ll be feeling is awake and super positive!
